Now open to all actors 18 and over, this AT intensive is perfect for students currently in college, actors who have recently relocated to the NYC area (with or without college), recent college graduates, or students taking a gap year. No matter what brought you here, you’re in the BIG CITY now, so let’s get you #booked! Classes will focus on how to adjust to life as an artist in NYC, as well as how to successfully navigate that competitive audition circuit….with Lindsay and RSO as your guides!
CHECK OUT OUR STAFF HERE!
SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?
Programs run 9AM—6PM Monday—Friday for the two weeks of each program, and include the following courses, geared slightly different for each student group:
ACTOR THERAPY with Lindsay Mendez and RSO (daily 2:30p—4p)
Just like a golden age standard, this class never goes out of style. Lindsay and RSO will focus on each student’s individual needs- maximizing strengths while recognizing and helping improve weaknesses. Audition technique, book building, marketing your type, and ultimately discovering yourself as an artist are all components of this amozzzzing class.
DAILY DANCE in Ballet and Theatre Dance (daily 9a—10:30a, alternating styles)
Ready to WERK it out? Our fierce dance classes, taught by Broadway dancers and choreographers, will include a warm-up and technique training, as well as multiple combinations from Broadway shows. You KNOW you wanna kick ball change all over that.
ACTING TECHNIQUES (alternating days, 10:30a—12:30p)
In this class you’ll work on different styles of acting, as well as selecting and working on multiple monologues, ranging from classical to contemporary to classical. To be or not to be in this class is so NOT the question.
SCENE STUDY (alternating days, 10:30a—12:30p)
Students are assigned scenes from class musicals and plays, and will workshop them with a working actor or director. Students can expect to examine two to three scenes each during their session.
MASTER CLASSES with a different Broadway Pro every day! (daily, 4-5p)
All of the above and 10 master classes to boot? (How’s that for a resume builder…) This will include Tony Award winning performers, directors, music directors, dancers, choreographers, agents, casting directors, writers, composers, and more!
ART AND BIZ with Sierra Boggess and RSO (daily, 4-5p)
Alternating topics each day, a class dedicated one day to your HEART (Sierra: "You are enough!!!") and the next, to your BRAIN (RSO: Let's talk money. Let's talk jobs. Let's talk planning!). We're here to fill in the gaps between the skill-building techniques to fire up your passion AND your drive.
COACHINGS
We are preparing our students for the professional world of a lot of auditions and call back material, so we will be challenging our students to muscle through it! We will be offering our students coaching opportunities to go over their new material.
PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS (once per week, 6-6:30p or 6:30-7p)
Each student gets two opportunities throughout the session for private voice coachings with a voice technician. Each thirty minute session will focus on technique, placement and, most importantly, maintaining vocal health.
We will enroll about 16 students, so class sizes are small to emphasize maximum attention per student.
But wait there's more below ... !
All of the above culminates in a SHOWCASE FOR INDUSTRY PROS (which may include agents, casting directors, and college admissions faculty) on the final day of each session, with students performing material they’ve been working on, curated by their instructors.
But Jesus Christ Superstar, there’s more! INCLUDED with tuition are:
A 30-minute HEADSHOT session by acclaimed New York headshot studio MurphyMade at their official studio. Students will receive one retouched digital photo file, with more retouching options
Two half-hour VOICE LESSONS (between 6—7p at various times)
FREE TICKETS TO TWO DIFFERENT SHOWS in NYC sponsored by the friends of Actor Therapy
HOUSING: ACTOR THERAPY'S COLLABORATION WITH THE "DANCER DORMS"
Actor Therapy partners directly with a student housing coordinator who will be able to assist you with your housing needs. Student Housing Associates helps students find safe dorm housing close to our campus in midtown Manhattan. Dorms are occupied by dancers, actors, singers and other artists here to study and take class in the city. To inquire about this housing option, please contact us, subject: Intensive Housing.
Additionally, students are allowed to live a commutable distance (i.e., Connecticut or New Jersey), as long as they appear on time to class every day.

FAQs
Where is the Actor Therapy Intensive located?
We will be located at Pearl Studios, 500 8th Avenue, which are easily accessible by blue, red, orange and yellow subway lines, as well as numerous busses, the PATH train, NJ Transit, LIRR and Amtrak to Penn Station. (Note: some location days may change.)
I’m more of a singer-actor than dancer, or more dancer-actor than singer … is this still the right program for me?
As long as you have some level of experience in singing, acting and dancing, it’s totally normal to have strengths or weaknesses, and this program is perfectly designed to help students with their individual needs!
How many students will be enrolled in the program?
About 16 students will be enrolled in each group.
I didn’t go to, nor do I plan to go to college for musical theatre. Can I still take the NEW YORK OR BUST program?
Can you? You must! This is ideal for you … as we know a lot of very talented people who decided the college route is not for them, and it worked out pretty darn well. :)
I have a conflict with one or more days of my session. Can I still enroll?
We allow up to one pre-approved day of conflict. (Known conflicts must be submitted at time of application. No conflicts are allowed on the first day of each session, or the final day of each session - which is the day of the student showcase.)
What does each student need to bring with them?
Dance attire; any or all sheet music in use by the student; some clothing options to showcase in; headshot/resume if applicable; plus the usual “school” supplies. Students should also bring any medications that they are prescribed and take during the normal school year. Students are also encouraged to bring water in a reusable bottle every day as workshops will be physically demanding.
What will students do for lunch during the day?
Students will have a break for lunch every day and are welcome to bring food with them or can leave to purchase lunch from a local business.
How are teachers and artists selected to lead classes and workshops?
RSO and Lindsay personally select each teacher/artist based on their knowledge and skill level in their related area of expertise relating to theatre and performing arts.
What is the AT workload like?
Since this is an INTENSIVE, you will definitely have homework. Be prepared to learn new music, assigned specifically for you by Lindsay and RSO, plus scenes for scene study and monologues for your acting class! We want to make sure you get the most out of your time with us, so be ready to dig in and get to work!
If you assign me new songs, will I be responsible for finding and printing the sheet music?
Great question! We know it can be hard to find and print music, especially when you’re in class all day. Luckily, we here at Actor Therapy have a full staff designated to helping you out. We will do our best to help you find your sheet music, and print it for you if you need it.
If I’m learning new songs, will I be able to work with a pianist?
Yes! In addition to private coachings with our resident music director to go over your material, we will also offer you the opportunity to get plunked out tracks of your cuts, so that you can practice in the comfort of your own home!
What if I get sick during the program?
We hope this doesn’t happen, but we understand that sickness can’t be avoided! If you are able, we highly encourage you to try and attend your classes. Watching your classmates and taking notes can be just as valuable as participating, so we are totally cool with you observing if you are under the weather. Just make sure to communicate with us beforehand!
What is the average age of the students who attend?
The average age of our students is 19-24, but we have had an exceptional 18 year old, and several students further along in their journey. As long as the student is anxious to learn, they'll be a great fit.
I’m not 18 yet, but I want to join your program? Can I still attend?
We LOVE that you want to join us, but unfortunately this specific program is geared towards students ages 18 and over. However, you should definitely check out our Actor Therapy College Prep Program, which was created specifically for students ages 15-19! Find out more information here: http://www.actortherapynyc.com/summer/ We would love to have you!
Do I have to audition to attend your intensive?
Nope! We ask you for a video submission solely so that our team can get to know you and your work ahead of time. Once we receive your tuition and submission video, you are officially enrolled!
What makes Actor Therapy different than other acting intensives around the city?
Actor Therapy is unique, first and foremost, in that we combine the highest level training with a focus on individuality and embracing every student as their own artist and their own business, which we (and all our friends!) have found is the key to being successful in an artistic industry. Furthermore, our teachers are also current industry professionals: actors, writers, directors, choreographers, and more — and they are here for YOU. In addition to helping you find new material and learn new rep, we do our best to cultivate relationships with each of our students. We think that the best way to bring out your unique artistry is by knowing and understanding YOU. This is Actor Therapy, after all!
What if I’m not a dancer ... do I have to attend dance class?
Absolutely! We find dance to be extremely important when it comes to casting, so dance class will be a daily part of your curriculum. Don’t worry, we make sure that class is geared towards all levels, so you won’t feel overwhelmed or out of place!
What is the primary focus of Actor Therapy NY or Bust?
Our main goal is to get you ready to tackle anything that New York throws at you! We want you to leave feeling prepared for life as an actor in New York, with new rep in your book, new ways to interpret your material, authenticity in the room, and confidence in how you present yourself to the people behind the table.
If I have any sort of problem during the intensive, what do I do?
COMMUNICATE! We care about each of our students, but we can’t help you if we don’t know what’s wrong! No matter how big or small your issue may be, we highly encourage you to talk to us, either via email or in person, and let us know what’s going on. We are always here to help!
Are there any discounts?
Yes!
• Any returning Actor Therapy student will pay less than the standard rate. Email us for more.
• Equity Membership Candidate (EMC): 5% off tuition.
• AEA (Equity) Member: 15% off tuition.
After the deposit is paid, when is the balance due?
The balance for each student’s session is due December 15. If you are interested in discussing a payment plan, you can email here, subject: payment plan.
What if my plans change and I can no longer attend the workshop I signed up for. What options do I have for refunds?
Both the deposit and the balance, once paid, are non-refundable. That said, if a student must cancel their attendance between paying the deposit and paying the balance, then only the deposit is forfeited. Tuition is due in full one month prior to the intensive start date. You agree to these terms when the deposit is placed.
Does Actor Therapy offer any sort of payment plans for the balance?
Yes! Email us to inquire! intensive@actortherapynyc.com.
I have another question … How do find out more?
